All about the Photography Safari – 14 nights.

From the moment you step off the plane at Kilimanjaro airport to the moment you pack the last item for your trip back home, Tanzania cements a special place in your heart. Each day is an accumulation of memories that will stay with you forever. Each day is filled with adventure, exploration, inspiration, and the opportunity to create fine art for photographers. Tanzania’s national parks are vibrant ecosystems bursting with exotic life, and the Serengeti is a photographer’s dream. Dramatic sunrises and sunsets ignite an open canvas for creation. Take the opportunity to step into your very own wildlife documentary. Capture the moments you’ve seen countless times in National Geographic with your own camera. There is a reason so many documentaries have been filmed here- it is as raw and beautiful as it gets.

Our expert nature and wildlife photographer looks back on his many trips to Tanzania in amazement at the abundance of museum-quality images he can capture in such relatively short amounts of time. The saturation of capturable moments is unlike anything he has experienced before.

Each day, pre-dawn light ignites a symphony of wild calls, such as the haunting bellows of male lions or the seesaw chatter of wildebeest. This blue hour opens the day. Wildlife is most active in the morning, and we will have a front-row seat to the show.

One of the keys to getting incredible images is patience. We head out early, find a particular species and spend an hour or two with it—no rushing from site to site, animal to animal. Imagine coming across a mother leopard with her two cubs, placing the soft morning light at your back, and capturing their connection with each other. Watch her cleaning and nursing them or the playful moments between siblings. Every detail is thought out to give you the optimal conditions to bring home award-winning photographs.

Because photography is at the heart of what our experience is all about, our jeep is outfitted with the photographer in mind. The windows can be removed from all passenger seating areas opening up sweeping views allowing the photographer room for composition. Charging docks all around the interior, weighted bean bags for stabilization, lens cleaning kits, extra memory cards suited for most camera brands, and the opportunity to shoot with one of the best cameras and lenses available on the market today. Perfect for capturing those coveted images of birds in flight or an awakening pride of social lions, the Canon R3 with accompanying 600mm F/4 fires off an impressive 30 frames per second, freezing the motion for razor-sharp images. Our expert photographer will teach you how to use the essential functions of this powerful camera or help you get the most out of yours. We will tailor the experience to exactly what you want for as many days as you want.  Adjustments can be made to the itinerary & pricing shown.

  1. Night 1 Arrival

Our itinerary is designed to maximize your chance to get the best shots possible during your trip.

Upon arrival to Arusha via Kilimanjaro Airport we will meet you at the airport for transfer to your hotel. Depending the arrival time of your flight we may have time to explore town and some of the bustling markets before getting a good night rest after a long trip.

  2. Nights 2-4 Tarangire National Park

We will leave early on our first full day from Arush to Tarangire National Park. Famous for its density of elephants and baobab trees, we will spend our time working on different ways to capture both. With luck, we will have the opportunity to photograph tree-climbing lions found only in a handful of African national parks. We have the opportunity to experience a walking safari (additional cost), but the intimate feeling of being on foot is incredibly exciting. We will have no agenda outside of searching for wildlife for incredible shots. Every evening our expert photographer will answer questions over cocktails about photography to help fine tune your skills for the following day.

  3. Nights 5-8 Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Surrounding the ancient volcanic caldera of the Ngorongoro Crater, this region is rich with unique wildlife habitats. This will also be a great opportunity to visit local tribes to view and photograph ancient traditions still being practiced today.

    – Our first full day will be exploring inside the caldera with the possibility of photographing black rhinoceros, hippopotamus, lions, gazelles, hyenas, flamingos, grey crowned cranes and many other species. This unique habitat is unlike any in Africa and has been designated UNESCO World Heritage Site status. A well-groomed network of roads crisscrosses the caldera allowing us to explore the multiple habitats inside the crater.

    – Day 2 we will focus on the rich cultural sites located in the region. Our morning will be spent with the Hadzabe tribe where we will have the opportunity to get an inside look to one of Africa’s last remaining nomadic hunter-gather tribes. Our focus will be education of a disappearing way of life, intimate tribal portrait photography and the possibility of photographing a hunt. After lunch we will visit another tribe famous for jewelry making and crafts. With our hearts full and memory cards maxed out we will head back to the Plantation Lodge for a relaxing evening where our expert photographer will lead a discussion on cultural and wildlife photography.

    – Day 3 will have some flexibility built into the schedule. While spending so many continuous days searching for wildlife or immersing ourselves in culture this day can be a welcome break in the trip. (Option 1. Sleep in, take a stroll through town popping in and out of art galleries and shops or spend the whole day lounging by the pool. (Option 2. Take a ride into Lake Manyara National Park where we will continue searching for wildlife including many species of exotic birds in their dense lakeside forest. After exploring the western edge of Lake Manyara we will head back to the Plantation Lodge

    – Day 4 Drive to Serengeti National Park and visit Maasai Tribe

  4. Nights 9-13 Serengeti National Park

After driving across the Northern region of the Serengeit National Park, stopping along the way for any wildlife spottings, we will be spending the next few days on safari. This is where we hope to see a wildebeest crossing and observe the Great Migration (July, Aug, Sept). Each night we will set an agenda for the following day based on what remaining wildlife shots you will want before leaving Tanzania. Our days will start at sunrise and end at sunset catching both blue and golden hours of the day for incredible lighting. Luch will be packed to enjoy under the shade of a tree in the bush while we watch the wildlife roam the landscape.

  5. Night 14 Return to Arusha

With our memory cards full we will begin our journey back to Arusha. For those not wanting the comfort of our jeep flights leave daily from this part of the Serengetti to Arusha where we will arrange for transport back to your hotel. (flights not included).  Those wishing to continue to view the Tanzanian wilderness and villages we will leave in the morning after breakfast for a leisurely drive back to Arusha.
